The Agafay Desert is just 30 minutes from Marrakech — and with a rental car, you can explore it at your own pace. Here's everything you need to know.

The Agafay Desert is one of Morocco's best-kept secrets — a rocky, lunar landscape just 30km from the pink walls of Marrakech.

How to Get There

From Gueliz, take the Route de l'Ourika south, then follow signs for Lalla Takerkoust. The road is paved all the way. Any car in our fleet handles it easily, though the Duster gives you flexibility to explore dirt tracks.

What to See

The Agafay stretches across a stony plateau that looks like a miniature Sahara. It's not sand dunes — it's ancient rocky desert with dramatic views of the High Atlas. On clear days, you can see Toubkal (North Africa's highest peak, 4,167m) from the plateau.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon light turns the rocky surface golden. Sunrise from the Agafay — with the Atlas behind you — is unforgettable. Summer is hot; go early. Spring and autumn are perfect.

Desert Camps & Lunch

Several eco-camps and glamping sites dot the Agafay. Book lunch at one — many offer stunning terraces with Atlas views. Expect tagine, mint tea and Berber hospitality.

Combining with Lalla Takerkoust

A large reservoir sits at the edge of the Agafay. You can kayak or paddleboard here, then loop back to Marrakech via Aït Ourir for a full day circuit.

Driving Tips

The main roads are paved. Side tracks to camps may be rocky — the Duster's 217mm ground clearance makes these easy. Petrol up before leaving Marrakech; stations are sparse in the Agafay.
